It’s that time of year! Summer has arrived, and with it, pool and beach season. We are lucky to live within walking and short driving distances to beautiful water attractions. Swimming is one of the most popular summer time activities for kids and adults alike. It is also one of most beneficial forms of exercise.
Swimming is a low impact exercise with huge health benefits. No other workout burns calories, boosts metabolism, and firms every muscle in your body (without putting stress on your joints) better than a swimming workout. Water provides resistance in all directions, so as you move you are always encountering resistance. This provides a more balanced workout. Depending on the speed of movement, water’s resistance can also range between 4 and 42 times greater than in air. Each movement in the pool is more challenging to the muscles and results in a higher workout intensity compared to land exercises.
Swimming can do more than just tone your muscles and strengthen your core: it can significantly lower your stress, too. Many swimmers consider their pool time to be therapeutic, meditative, and rejuvenating. Swimming is great in the long term for stress relief because it helps to increase the size of the lungs. By increasing lung size, breathing becomes deeper. The deeper the breath, the more relaxed we become.
Make it a family affair to stay cool and get exercise together! Learning to swim is a valuable life skill that can help save a child’s life as well as promote strength, coordination and confidence. It’s a great way to show children that exercise can be fun as well as rewarding.
