Emzi Wewers joined the I’On Club team in July 2015 as Director of Membership. She accepted the position of General Manager in July 2017. Emzi has spent 18 years working in all areas of club operations, all in the Charleston area, including membership, marketing, golf operations, food and beverage, catering and events, accounting and maintenance. She began her hospitality career working at Walt Disney World.
Emzi grew up in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. She moved to Charleston to attend Johnson and Wales University. She lives in McClellanville with her husband, Drew, and sons, Quinn and Cyrus.
Maggie comes to I’On Club from Burn San Francisco as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor. She believes exercise to be an essential part of a healthy and happy lifestyle, providing not only physical benefits, but mental and psychological nurturing as well. As a lifelong athlete, coach and trainer, Maggie has experienced firsthand the transformative power of fitness, and strives to share this experience with The I’On Club members. Drawing on a wide range of exercise disciplines, such as Pilates, weight training, plyometrics, and kickboxing, Maggie’s workouts are effective, dynamic, engaging, and fun!
Chef Mike Vargas joined the I’On Club team in May 2019. Mike’s culinary career began early on, inspired by his grandmother and her love and respect for quality and tradition. Chef Vargas’ culinary repertoire flourished during a Garde Mager position at Ascari Restaurant in Braintree, Massachusetts, under the tutelage’ of Chef Joshua P. Botsford, earning him the position of Executive Sous Chef at 33 Restaurant & Lounge, in Bostons beautiful Back Bay. There working closely with Chef Botsford, he developed and refined his culinary techniques. As Chef Botsford moved on, Chef Vargas was introduced to the next influential person in his career, Chef Anthony E. Dawodu, who exposed him to his creative expressions of Asian and progressive American cooking techniques. Chef Vargas worked with Chef Dawodu for several years following him to Rosewood Hotel and Resorts an international luxury hotel and resort company operating 27 hotels in 15 countries. While with Rosewood, Chef Vargas worked as Executive Sous Chef at the Carlyle Hotel, which is considered as one of the world’s most glamorous hotel located on the famous 5th Avenue in Manhattan, as well as the beautiful Caneel Bay Resort, located in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Chef Vargas is energized and excited to weave flavors from his experiences and travels while paying particular homage to fresh local ingredients and create a truly unique experience for I’On Club members.
Jen grew up in Novi, Michigan and then attended Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI where she received her Bachelor of Science, Interdisciplinary Studies in Health & minor in Psychology. After graduating in 2011, she moved to Charleston to pursue a master’s degree from MUSC. Jen began at I’On Club as a front desk associate while working in the home health care field. She moved on to manage the front desk staff and clubhouse operations in addition to member services and accounting. Jen stepped into the role of Assistant General Manager in 2019.
Director of High Performance Junior Development Mehdi was born in Paris, France and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He played junior tennis at Ottawa’s famous Rideau Tennis and Squash Club. Mehdi was an active athlete, earning a starting position in every high school discipline he pursued, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, Olympic handball, badminton and track and field. After studying journalism in college he moved to Myrtle Beach to begin a successful career with the town’s daily newspaper. He left the newspaper to become the assistant tennis professional at Prestwick Tennis and Swim Club in Myrtle Beach and a few years later, its Director of Swim and Tennis. Mehdi will bring extensive knowledge and experience to I’On Club’s junior and adult development and can sum up his tennis philosophy in three words: Care, Impact, and Performance.
